Tossing your Toothbrush: Signs that It's Time

Posted on 11/15/2015 by Crafton Dental
A woman brushing her teeth with an old toothbrush. How long has your toothbrush been sitting on your bathroom counter? Do you even remember the last time that you got a new one? While the general rule is that you should replace your brush every three months, certain signs could indicate that it needs to be changed sooner, so you should know what to look for.

You Drop It
Consider the fact that you brush your teeth in the dirtiest room in your home, and then think about dropping your toothbrush onto the floor where you stand with your stinky, bare feet. The five-second rule doesn't apply to toothbrushes, so if you drop it, consider swapping it out for a new one. At the very least, be sure to sterilize and disinfect it properly.

The Bristles Are Worn Out

If the bristles of your toothbrush appear worn out or frayed, it might be a good sign that you need a new brush. Your bristles should remain rigid while keeping their original color. If a ton of toothpaste buildup is causing problems with the bristles, you can also assume that your brush is harboring bacteria, which is another sign that you should get a replacement.

Your Toothbrush Has Touched Someone Else's Brush

If your toothbrush makes contact with someone else's, you've swapped different bacteria with that person. If he or she has been ill, you could get sick, as well. However, you should consider some other factors before you toss your brush.

For example, if you and your spouse have been swapping bacteria to begin with, having your brushes touch probably won't expose you to any bacteria that could make you sick. However, if your brush touches anyone else's, you should hit the store for a replacement.
