However, none of us really want to lose our natural teeth and to have to rely on these restorations, so it is important that we are properly caring for our mouths. Additionally, by knowing some of the top signs that tooth loss could be on the horizon, you can take steps to protect yourself.

You're a Smoker

Most of us know that smoking is bad for our heart and lungs, but what people don't often realize is that smoking can also result in tooth loss. Smoking affects the blood supply in the gums, and it will also increase the development and severity of gum disease. Both traditional and smokeless cigarettes can increase your risk of tooth loss.

You Are Under Frequent Stress

Chronic stress is bad for your health, but it also can have a negative effect on your teeth. When you are feeling stressed, you may clench or grind your teeth, even when you are asleep and can't control your behaviors. There are a variety of techniques that can help you to relieve your stress, including meditation, yoga, and exercise, but if you are still clenching and grinding your teeth chronically, you should talk to your dentist about investing in a bite guard.

Dental Health Isn't a Priority

The most important thing you can do to protect your teeth against tooth loss is to practice good dental hygiene. If caring for your mouth isn't high on your list of priorities, you are likely setting yourself up for a future of tooth loss. Instead, ensure that you are brushing or flossing regularly, and you will also want to schedule regular dental exams at least once every six months.

If you are concerned about tooth loss, please call our office today for an evaluation.
