The Pros & Cons of Dental Implants & Dentures

A dental implant consists of the post, abutment, and restoration. Here at Crafton Dental in Columbia, MD we want all of our patients to be well-informed before they commit to any product or procedure that we offer. One of the hottest debates is between dentures and dental implants. Which is better? What is best for you? Everyone has a different answer to this question, so let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each so that you can make an educated decision on which option will work best for you.

Dental Implants Explained

Dental implants are surgically placed into the jaw bone of the patient and are a permanent fixture in the mouth. They look and act just like your real teeth. Every dental implant is made up of three parts – the implants post, the abutment, and the prosthetic implant restoration. Dental implants can replace single teeth, several missing teeth, even full arches of teeth.

•

Dental Implant Pros:

Dental implants have a lot of great advantages over dentures. For starters they are permanent, and you can take care of them the same way you take care of natural teeth – with daily brushing and flossing. Dental implants stay put because they become a permanent part of your mouth thanks to the process known as osseointegration. Osseointegration is the healing process that occurs between the bone in your jaw and the titanium dental implant. Thanks to osseointegration dental implants end up acting just like your natural teeth! Dental implant even restores some oral health value to your mouth.

•

Dental Implant Cons:

Dental implants come with a high, upfront price point that many find hard to swallow. It can take several months for dental implants to heal and for us to craft the permanent prosthetic that will act are your dental implant restoration, meaning that it could be several months before you get to use your new dental implants.

Traditional Dentures Explained

Dentures are a removable tooth replacement option that has been perfected quite a lot since your grandparents had them.

•

Denture Pros:

Dentures still have a lot to offer patients who have experienced tooth loss. They can be made to replace a single tooth (partial denture) or all of the teeth in your mouth (full denture). Dentures are made of an acrylic material that looks just like real teeth and can restore your ability to eat most of the foods you enjoyed while you still had your natural teeth. Dentures can replace your teeth in a matter of weeks, as the process to have them made is less intensive than that of dental implants.

•

Denture Cons:

Because dentures are removable, they must be held in place with denture adhesives that can be messy and may not hold throughout the day. If you denture adhesive is not up to the job you might find that you have to clean your dentures and reapply the denture adhesive to get them to last you the rest of the day. They must be removed to be cleaned and while you sleep at night. Care must be taken while handling dentures because they can break if they are dropped.

Dentures are the traditional tooth replacement option, but you may be better off getting a dental implant.
