Invisalign®

Aligners are made of strong medical grade plastic that is virtually invisible when worn. Aligners are clear and look similar to tooth-whitening trays, but are custom designed to move teeth.

For years, orthodontists and dentists have used removable appliances for limited treatment. Today, with the application of computer technology and custom manufacturing, Invisalign® treats a broader range of cases with greater precision.

The Clear Alternative to Braces®

Invisalign® uses 3-D computer imaging technology to depict the complete treatment plan, from the initial position to the final desired position, from which a series of custom-made clear aligners are produced. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks. The aligner is then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.

Clear, Removable, and Comfortable Invisible Braces

With Invisalign®, you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing. Unlike braces, there are no eating restrictions during treatment, because you can remove the trays. You can also brush and floss normally to maintain good oral hygiene.

Invisalign® allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan before you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.

Invisalign®, among others, is a registered trademark of Align Technology, Inc.

Frequently Asked Questions About Invisalign®

Invisalign is an attractive option for many patients seeking to straighten their teeth without the bulk and distraction of traditional metal braces. Because Invisalign is still a relatively new treatment, we at Crafton Dental know you probably have many questions. We’ve compiled a list of common questions and helpful answers below!

•

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a teeth-straightening treatment that consists of a series of custom-made clear, plastic aligners similar in shape to a dental retainer. While retainers are used to keep teeth in place, Invisalign aligners are used to shift teeth in gradual increments. The aligners are custom-made for your teeth from a mold taken by Dr. Lisa Crafton. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks until your treatment is complete.

•

How Much does it Cost?

You might be surprised to hear that straightening your teeth with Invisalign costs about the same as traditional options like metal braces. Many insurance plans will cover Invisalign, and we encourage you to speak with your provider to find out more.

•

How Long does it Take?

The amount of time it’ll take for your Invisalign treatment to give you a beautiful, even smile is largely dependent on your smile at the beginning of treatment. The average length of treatment is about 12 months for adults. For younger patients and teens, the length of treatment may vary but can be expected to be roughly the same as traditional braces.

•

What is the Process?

If you think Invisalign might be right for you, we encourage you set up a consultation with Dr. Lisa Crafton at our Columbia, MD office. During your consultation, Dr. Lisa Crafton will conduct a thorough examination, including x-rays, molded impressions, and photographs of your teeth.

Once your aligners arrive, we may recommend special fasteners to help you keep them in place. The fasteners are bonded to your teeth and nearly invisible. You’ll wear each aligner for about two weeks. We will likely recommend follow-up visits to our office every six weeks or so to check on progress and make any small adjustments needed. At the end of treatment, you’ll be able to share your straight, beautiful smile with the world!

•

How does it Compare to Braces?

While both Invisalign and traditional braces effectively straighten teeth, Invisalign is more comfortable and convenient. Traditional braces can be cumbersome and even scratch the delicate tissue on the inside of your cheeks. Traditional braces can also be difficult to clean and prohibitive when it comes to eating some of your favorite foods. With Invisalign, you can remove your aligners to eat and drink, as well as conduct your usual oral hygiene routine. For patients concerned with aesthetics, Invisalign is near, well, invisible. You should wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day, but they won’t be obvious to your friends or coworkers. With Invisalign, you get all the teeth-straightening benefits of braces with all of the comfort, ease, and discretion of clear, plastic aligners.
