Orthodontic Emergencies

Loose Band or Bracket:

If a band or bracket is still attached to a wire, leave it in place. If discomfort occurs, place wax on it. If it comes out completely, wrap brace or bracket in tissue for safe keeping.

Loose Wire:

Try to place the wire back in place with tweezers. If that is not possible, clip wire with fingernail clippers behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If any discomfort occurs, place wax on it.

Poking Wire:

Try to push the sticking wire down with a spoon or pencil eraser; if this is not possible, place wax on it.

Lost Tiewire or Elastic Tie:

Notify us at the next orthodontic appointment.

Soreness:

Use warm salt water rinses and/or Tylenol® or Ibuprofen.

Headgear Does Not Fit:

Improperly fitting headgear can sometimes be caused by not wearing as prescribed. If facebow is bent, call office immediately.

Loose Appliance:

If the appliance is sticking or poking, place wax on it.
