|The human tooth is made up of many layers. The outermost layer is very hard and covered in enamel. This is the layer that allows you to chew and bite. The innermost layer is made up of a more porous layer called dentin.
This layer is beneath the enamel and it extends down below the gum line. Below this layer is the pulp which is where all of the blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues are located.
What Causes Sensitive Teeth?A chipped, broken or cracked tooth enamel allows the inner dentin layer to be exposed. This makes way for the underlying tubules and nerve endings to be exposed. A nerve ending that is exposed to hot, cold and even touch is very sensitive.
Grinding of the teeth, clenching, receding gums, and even improper brushing can all cause the dentin to be exposed.
Dealing with Sensitive TeethSensitive teeth can be very difficult to live with. The bad news is that once gone, the enamel will not return. The good news is that there are things that you can do to make living with sensitive teeth more manageable.
First and foremost, brushing gently with a soft bristled brush will help prevent further enamel erosion and gum irritation. You can talk with your dentist about getting a toothpaste that works to block the nerve endings or one that insulates the nerves.
Additionally, you can use a fluoride mouth rinse or gel specially formulated to help sensitive teeth, to help ease the discomfort that comes along with living with sensitive teeth.
Continuing routine dental checkups and practicing proper oral hygiene will help to ensure that no further damage is done to the teeth and that you are doing everything in your power to prevent further issues that may be contributing to your sensitive teeth.
