Holistic Dentistry FAQ

Young man smiling in front of natural green backgroundYour dental health, along with your overall health is important, and we believe they are connected. Studies are increasingly showing a link between oral care and other systemic health; we believe that having a healthy mouth can also mean being healthy in other areas. Our team at Crafton Dental can provide you the tips, education and preventive care you need to help you maintain a healthy mouth, and together, we can help you feel better overall.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

Holistic dentistry is a move forward in dentistry, it follows the belief that your oral health is connected to your overall health. Disease in the mouth can be indicative of disease elsewhere. At Crafton Dental, we focus on using non-toxic, biocompatible materials when restoring your teeth, we strive to eliminate infection and promote good health in the teeth, gums, and oral cavity including the neck, head and their structural relationship. We will ask you about medications you are taking, whether they seem relevant to your oral health or not, we may also ask to work with other healthcare professionals, this is done in part for promoting integrated, complementary care.

Medical care in the past has always been very compartmentalized, people see cardiologists for heart problems, they see podiatrists for feet problems, or dentists for mouth problems, and all these various specialties do have their place, but the body is also a single unit and all areas work in unison. Your mouth may be only one region of your body, but it is not disconnected from the body. Bacteria, infection, and disease in the mouth can spread and move affecting other areas.

At Crafton Dental, we have put a focus of on nutrition, preventive measures and being green. We work with our patients to include:
•  Multi-disciplinary, or integrated healthcare.
•  Preventive steps to reduce decay and infection.
•  Understanding your oral health and what should be put in the mouth.

What is Green Dentistry?

At Crafton Dental, we have made a conscious effort to provide our patients with a green office, we want to make the lowest impact on the environment possible.

Green dentistry means that we have integrated a variety of steps into our practice to be more environmentally friendly including:
•  Our office is completely digital, no paper charts. Digital charts are more efficient, less likely to get confused or lost, and saves us paper, space and time.
•  We submit all insurance forms electronically. Less paperwork, less problems with forms getting lost, we electronically transfer all information to your insurance company.
•  We sterilize our tools with a medical grade steamer, versus the use of chemicals. Your health is important to us, we clean our instruments with steam versus chemicals.
•  We create all x-rays through digital technology, no chemicals are used to develop film.

Is tooth decay and gum disease bad for my health?

Two incorrect thoughts that many people hold surround our teeth and gums. Many patients assume that everyone will experience a cavity and that gum disease is normal. We want to change the idea that many people share about tooth decay and gum disease. With the preventive steps and education, we have today, you can successfully live without ever having a cavity, and gum disease may be common, but it is not normal.

Our staff can help you have a healthier mouth, which may include helping you have a healthier body. Contact us today at (410) 381-5030 to learn more.
